Objective of Program
• To improve equitable access and efficient use of safe drinking water resources, reduce harmful WASH-related practices and improve sanitation and hygiene behaviors in Darchula, Achham, Kailali and Kanchanpur districts.
Program Output
• Enhanced family health through WASH improvements i.e. construction of 40 drinking water supply schemes (with 35 gravity-fed systems and five groundwater systems in schools), 107 hand pumps providing safe drinking water in the communities.
• Improved hygiene behavior of the community, including the reduction of repressive menstruation practices (Chhaupadi)
• A total of 93 events of culture/street drama were organized in different strategic locations in the working districts. A total of 90,973 people participated and observed the drama in 93 locations (Kailali, Kanchanpur, and Darchula) to motivate communities for ODF,
• A total of 22 orientations were organized with youth clubs. A total of 229 youths (113 males and 116 females) participated in the orientations to Youth Clubs and other civil society VDC levels.
• Each year the districts mobilized media and organized awareness campaigns for a 5-year period (Kailai-5, Kanchanpur-5, Darchula-5, and Achham-4).
• The districts involved 8 FM stations (2 in Kanchanpur, 2 in Achham, 1 in Darchula, and 3 Kailali) in regularly airing the sanitation and hygiene messages in the communities.
• A total of 222 events of day (Global Handwashing Day (October 15 each year), World Toilet Day (November 19 each year), Menstrual Hygiene Day (May 28 each year), FCHVs day, and Sanitation week) celebrations were observed in 4 districts; Kailali-68, Kanchanpur-51, Darchula-68 and Achham-35.
• A total of 1374 events of interaction with mother groups were organized in Kailali (632), Kanchanpur (515), Darchula (16) and Achham (211) districts.
• A total of 40 mass orientations to the water users’ committee on point of use (POU) water treatment were organized, 3 in Kailali, 5 in Kanchanpur, 18 in Achham and 14 in Darchula.
• A total of two sanitation champions were mobilized for door-to-door visits in Lamkichuwa Municipality and Godavari Municipality to gear up the sanitation campaign.
• A total of 10 exposure visits were organized in which a total of 348 participants from 19 different schools learned the importance of sanitation and hygiene through observation.
• A total of 41 pieces of training was organized on Chhaupadi reduction behaviour change strategy in 4 program districts with 767 participants.
• A total of 42 events (Kanchanpur-24, Achham-18) of orientation to girls on menstruation have been completed.
• 18 VDC level Chhaupadi control committee was formed.
• Enhanced governance of the WASH sector
• A total of 4 R-WASH-CC meetings were organized at the regional level
• A total of 66 events of Strategic participation and plan formulation in V/M-WASH-CC for better WASH Governance were completed.
• A total of 78 training events training 869 FCHVs was completed.
• A guideline was prepared during the workshop that includes points on how to mobilize and engage the education sector in the ODF process.
